Science can define and explain almost everything in our world, and yet unexplained is just a matter of time or expanding human knowledge. Inability to explain the nature of objects or events is the one of the most earliest and deepest fears in human nature. The source I chose to explore is effectively uses the anxiety that comes with trying to understand or study the unknown and the fear of never being able to. The source is called “SCP Foundation”, a collaborative fiction online writing project. It was originally based in 2008 on a set of unconnected short “files” or descriptions of fictional objects and events with anomalous effects and affects on people and environment. Later the standalone website was created as well as the fundamental lore and “origins” of SCP Foundation. The website consists of multiple descriptions of basis, on which the stories are written on, the origins and missions of organization, and the objects, written in scientific document format. The authors of those stories are users, who have an account and whose work was rated high enough to be displayed under the “objects” category. The stories themselves are object descriptions, or otherwise called “files”, but usually referred to as SCP-number. By the time of writing there are about 4300 objects written since the year 2008. There are five series which refers to a thousandth digit in a number. The objects’ documentations tell about unique anomalous entities or events, their containment procedures, description, including retrieval and studying, and, sometimes, addendums or logs on ongoing research. Some objects are made interesting and very descriptive, others are fearful and scary. The fear of unknown and unexplainable with sometimes included logs is what connects my source material with the course.
The SCP Foundation is an organization that operates beyond jurisdictions with the task to secure, contain, and protect anomalous objects and entities. The foundation acts worldwide, eliminating threat of the objects and containing them in facilities in order to study anomalous effects and affects. Those objects, that are found all over the planet and beyond, present from no to severe threat to humanity. Those objects are being contained and studied by SCP Foundation. Each individual object proposes its own description along with containment procedures. The logs and addendums narrate the story of discovery, retrieval and study. The objects could be in the form of a simple, human-made, objects, human-like entities, non-terrestrial monsters, places, and/or events in time.
The adaptation I am going to write will be a uniquely written story, to fit the lore and style presented by the website. The work written will include all aspects and motifs of similar works to make it a complete adaptation of the original source. The cultural theme, I will address, is how people can examine and study something, that falls out of human understanding.
